A unique Country - What to Expect

The Gambia

Under 6 hours from London with no time difference, The Gambia is an English speaking former British colony and an exciting destination all year round.

An ideal winter sun getaway, temperatures are high and rain is virtually unheard of for November right through to June.

During the summer, brief but heavy showers transform the Gambia into a blaze of greens and tropical flowering trees; nevertheless it has grown in popularity with those looking for a tranquil alternative to the crowded resorts of Europe.

The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa, situated on the un-spoilt west coast on approximately the same latitude as Barbados.

Mostly flat, the country is dominated by the majestic River Gambia from which it takes its name. A sub-tropical climate, fascinating culture, magnificent wide sandy beaches and some of the friendliest people on earth add up to a great holiday destination.

The Gambia is not for everyone, as the pace of life is unhurried, but many people get hooked, returning year after year.

First time travellers are not always prepared for the cultural shock awaiting them in a developing country. There is poverty and begging but in contrast there is also a genuine hospitality. Outside the hotels and on the beaches, visitors encounter Gambians making a living selling fruit, nuts and handicrafts.
